Learn with Minot State
As a chemistry major at Minot State, you’ll study organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical, and physical chemistry. You will also study physics, biology, calculus, statistics, and research methods. All majors complete required general education courses.

Careers in chemistry
A chemistry degree opens many career pathways including medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, chemical sales, environmental law, and forensics. Careers within the chemistry industry can span from working on cures for cancer to monitoring the ozone to discovering new materials to make our homes warmer in the winter. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, chemists and material scientists earn a median pay of $81,810 per year. 

Degree options

  • Bachelor of Arts with a major in chemistry offers two tracks of study:
      
    • General chemistry prepares you for a career in medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, chemical sales, forensics, environmental law, and more.
       
    • Medicinal plant chemistry prepares you for a career in extraction, purification, and analysis, quality control/assurance, and forensic chemistry.
       
  • Bachelor of Science with a major in Professional Chemistry

Class size
Minot State’s small classroom sizes allow you to experience valuable one-on-one interaction with professors and participate in practical collaboration with your classmates.
Research opportunities
You will participate in ongoing faculty research projects and are required to complete your own senior seminar research project. Minot State faculty research projects include:
  • Detection and environmental impact of metal ions
  • Organic synthesis and testing of fungicides
  • Studying how a certain type of bond in proteins can control how proteins work
Our facilities
Minot State chemistry students and faculty have access to a variety of instruments for use in classroom and research projects, including:
  • Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS)
  • Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS)
  • X-ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometer (MP-AES)
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR)
  • Tissue culture facilities
