General Studies

Minot State University also offers a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS), a flexible, highly individualized degree. It's a great way to develop a personalized major or to complete a bachelor's degree in a timely manner. You can earn your BGS degree on campus or online.

General studies majors work closely with academic advisors to ensure requirements are met and to help students shape their studies to meet their interests and goals.

Minot State University
Many students choose Minot State University because it's small and affordable. With an average of 13 students per class, our professors know students by name and have a genuine interest in their success. Outside the classroom, our instructors are engaged in real-world professional endeavors and research projects in which they often involve students - even freshmen. Minot State is a campus where you will learn by doing.

General Studies degree goals
The general studies degree is designed to help students:

  • Develop intellectual, social, cultural and problem-solving skills
  • Think and live creatively, critically, intuitively, and rationally
  • Understand and influence their world

What can I do with a BGS degree?
A BGS degree provides basic preparation for many careers and graduate programs, including education, law, government, health care, real estate, social service, and private industry. BGS students may go on to graduate programs such as business, fine arts, law, library science and more.

Complete BGS online
We offer more than 200 classes and nine bachelor's degrees classes online, including the Bachelor of General Studies degree. The flexibility in our course offerings provides a way to get an education. It's the perfect way to explore your options and take classes at your own pace.

Coursework
General studies requirements expose students to many disciplines, including communications, history, humanities, wellness, mathematics, science, and social science. General studies majors work closely with academic advisors to ensure requirements are met and to help students shape their studies to meet their interests and goals.

What is needed for graduations?

  • 120 credits are required for graduation.
  • 40 credits of 300-400 level coursework
  • 30 credits earned through Minot State University
  • 60 credits from a four-year college or university
  • 2.00 cumulative grade point average
  • General Education Requirements
  • Completion of MSU Diversity Requirements
  • BGS Survey & Essay
