Driver and Traffic Safety Education

Minot State offers courses in Driver's Education for a variety of purposes. Review the sections below for additional information

DTS 230 - Driver and Traffic Safety Education (3 semester hours)
This course is an introduction to driver and traffic safety education. The purpose of the course is to train the prospective instructor to teach the classroom portion of driver education.
This course is offered in fall, spring, and summer semesters.

DTS 260 - Teenage Driving Behavior Problems (2 semester hours)
This is a course that examines current literature on teenage driving behavior in order to prepare potential driver education teachers to teach good decision-making skills to young drivers.
This course is only offered in the spring semester.

DTS 350 - Advanced Driving (3 semester hours)
This course trains the prospective instructor how to develop and teach in-car lessons. Advanced driving teaches prospective teachers how to improve the driving skills, perception skills, decision making skills, and general driving ability of their students.
This course is offered in fall, spring, and summer semesters.

DTS 450 - Organization, Administration, & Supervision of Traffic Safety Education (2 semester hours)
This course covers how to organize, schedule, and manage a driver education program. Topics include: reporting procedures as required by state offices. Prerequisite or Corequisite: DTS 230.
This course is offered in fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Driver Education Endorsement or Teacher Licensure Requirements

North Dakota: DTS 230, 260, 350, and 450 are required for the Driver's Education Endorsement in North Dakota. Certification of driver and traffic safety educators in North Dakota is a function of the Education Standards and Practices Board.

ND DOT Driving School and Instructor Requirements

Minot State offers the following four courses to fulfill the instructor requirements:

DTS 230 - Driver and Traffic Safety Education (3 semester hours)

Non-credit/Teacher Workshop Option

ED 2000 - ND Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association Conference Workshop (1 semester hour)
This weekend conference will be held in Mandan, ND in the spring. One semester hour credit of non-degree graduate credit can be earned. Visit the NDDTSEA website for more information.

If you have never taken an undergraduate course from Minot State before, you first need to complete a  non-degree seeking admission application. Once you have been admitted, you will receive information from the Enrollment Services Office concerning your acceptance to Minot State. If you have questions about the non-degree admission process, please contact the Enrollment Services Office at 701-858-3350 or 1-800-777-0750, extension 3350.

If you have previously taken undergraduate courses from Minot State, you first need to complete an Application for Readmission and provide official transcripts for any colleges or universities you have attended since Minot State.

After you have been accepted to Minot State, you must complete the following steps:

Driver License Online Course (non-credit)
This online course is for minors (persons under the age of 18) whose driver's license has been canceled by the Department of Transportation or individuals who are completing an approved North Dakota Commercial Driving School road test waiver program. This course meets the requirements of the Department of Transportation for relicensing purposes. For further information and registration go to:
